Merrow

Literatura:
Em 30 de maio participamos do 2º Encontro De Literatura Para Crianças, iniciativa da Organização Neo Humanitarismo Universalista, ONH-U que teve como tema, este ano, a Conexão Cultural Irlanda.O evento deste ano abordou 'As Crônicas De Nárnia' de CS Lewis e 'As Viagens De Gulliver' de Jonathan Swift clássicos não apenas da literatura irlandesa mas patrimônio de toda a humanidade.

Festa do Imigrante:
A Irlanda começa a fazer parte do Memorial do Imigrante, em São Paulo, através da doação de material sobre a presença de irlandeses no Brasil feita por Peter O’Neill.

Além disso, o Memorial do Imigrante está aberto a doações de material histórico – documentos, fotografias etc – de irlandeses que escolheram o Brasil para viver. Também pretende que membros da colônia irlandesa no Brasil participem de depoimentos gravados que servirão a futuros pesquisadores. Para saber mais: www.irishinstitute.com.br/cultura.html#dan

It is very satisfying to see that the Irish Institute / Instituto Brasil-Irlanda is continuing to receive new and enthusiastic members (who often introduce further new members) all of them with a common interest in, curiosity about and a passion for Ireland, its culture, traditions and life.

I am sure that members would like to know about any of your own activities that you would like to share with us - please feel free to contribute material for the site and perhaps make some suggestions. Ideas are always welcome!

Lecture:
On August 20th there will be a lecture entitled 'Ireland: Magic and Spirit' given by Claudio Crow on the Institute's premises. It's a free event but places are limited! To enroll please write to: info@irishinstitute.com.br

Approved:
It's very satisfying to know that our website www.irishinstitute.com.br was officially accepted by the Open Directory Project - which has an extremely rigorous system of assessment. This is an internet body which acts as a reference for AOL Search, Netscape Search, Google, Lycos, HotBot and many other search engines. Our Forum:
Do You Want to exchange ideas about Ireland? Come to the forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/irish-institute. There we offer information and a contact point for all "Hibernophiles" (those who love Ireland) to exchange experiences, ask questions, give tips and, above all, share our PASSION FOR IRELAND. Participation is free.

On TV:
Ireland is going to be in the new tourism Shoptour TV programme! There will be 3 daily clips of 3 minutes each, on editorial basis, initially once a week. The average audience figure is 19 million! The content will be provided by the Brazil-Ireland Institute. Coming Soon!

Our events:

Merrow:
The Irish Institute supported the release of the first CD from the band Merrow, which was premiered at O'Malley's Pub, on July 15th. Take a look at: www.irishinstitute.com.br/sitemap.html#merrow.

Literature:
On May 30th we took part in the 2nd Meeting Of Literature For Children, an initiative of the Neo Humanitarism Universalist Organization, ONH-U that had "Cultural Connection with Ireland" as this year´s theme. This year's event was centred around 'The Chronicles Of Narnia' by C.S. Lewis and 'Gulliver's Travels' by Jonathan Swift, both being not only classics of the Irish literature, but part of our common human heritage.

Immigrant's Party:
Ireland is now part of the Immigrant Memorial, in São Paulo, due to the donation of material about the presence of Irish people in Brazil made by Peter O'Neill, Vice President of the Irish Institute.

In addition, the Immigrant Memorial is open to donations of historical material (documents, photographs, etc) of the Irish who chose to live in Brazil. It also requests that members of the Irish colony in Brazil participate in a series of recorded testimonies, which will be available for future researchers. As boas novidades a vocês:

O’lympub, a olimpíada no pub:
Para divulgar de forma divertida a cultura da Irlanda, o Instituto Brasil-Irlanda estará promovendo, de 3 a 31 de agosto, a O’lympub no pub O’Malleys, em São Paulo.

A competição será na forma de quiz, com cinco questões de múltipla escolha abordando temas como Música, Literatura, Cinema, Cultura Celta e Conhecimentos Gerais. Serão quatro diferentes quiz durante o mês e 3 vencedores semanais ganhando 3, 2 e 1 pint de Guinness, respectivamente.A participação é livre a todos os frequentadores.

Todos os participantes semanais entrarão do sorteio final que dará como prêmio um jantar para 2 pessoas,no O’Malleys, acompanhado de Guinness. Os sorteios serão feitos nos domingos 10,17,24 e 31 de agosto, às 20hs.

O O'Malleys fica na Al. Itu, 1529, esquina com rua da Consolação, nos Jardins.

Novo Embaixador:
Na foto o Embaixador Designado Pedro Fernando Brêtas Bastos, que deverá assumir seu posto na Embaixada do Brasil, em Dublin, em 1º outubro próximo, em recente evento no Rio de Janeiro onde aparecem: da esquerda para a direita, John O´Reilly, um dos correspondentes do Instituto Brasil-Irlanda em Dublin e co-fundador do Centro de Apoio aos Brasileiros na Irlanda - CABI, Renzo Pretti, do setor consular da Embaixada do Brasil em Dublin; o Embaixador Brêtas, e Peter O´Neill, Vice Presidente do Instituto- Brasil Irlanda.

Here then is our list of current news items:

O'lympub, the Pub Olympic Games
As an entertaining way to disseminate information the Irish culture, The Irish Institute is promoting, from August 3rd to August 31st, the "O'lympub" at O'Malley's Pub, in Sao Paulo.

The competition will be a quiz, with five multiple choice questions, covering topics such as Music, Literature, Film, Culture and Celtic Trivia. There will be four different quizzes during the month and 3 winners weekly, winning 3, 2 and 1 pint of Guinness, respectively. Participation is free to all visitors.

Participants from all weeks will enter the final draw, the prize being a dinner for 2, at O'Malley's Pub, accompanied by a pint of Guinness. The draws will be made on Sundays 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st August at 8 pm O'Malley's Pub is located at Alameda Itú 1529, Jardins, São Paulo, Brazil: +55 11 3086 0780. New Ambassador
In the attached photo, the Designated Ambassador Pedro Fernando Brêtas Bastos, who will take up his appointment at the Embassy of Brazil in Dublin on October 1st. Sucesso
Com grande satisfação vemos crescer o interesse pela Irlanda, através de tantos emails e visitas de novos amigos do Instituto. Prova disso foi o sucesso da palestra de Claudio Crow Quintino, Irlanda: Magia e Espírito realizada em dois dias consecutivos.

O'lympub
Esta é a última semana para participar da O'lympub, no O'Malleys, em São Paulo. Já foram anunciados 9 premiados e no domingo, 31, será conhecido o vencedor final. Quem quiser saber como são os quizzes, visite o site e veja as questões anteriores. Vale tentar.

Workshop
Heart Beat é o título do workshop dedicado exclusivamente ao ensino do Bodhrán, o tambor irlandês, que acontecerá no sábado, 6 de setembro, com apoio do Instituto Brasil-Irlanda.

O responsável pela iniciativa é Gustavo Lobão Maia, percussionista do grupo Dundalk, que vai falar sobre o que é o Bódhran na música irlandesa de hoje e também mostrar várias técnicas e ritmos possíveis com o instrumento.

O evento é aberto a todos os interessados e a participação custa R$10,00.

WEB TV
A Irlanda foi tema do programa Cine Pipoca, da WEBTV voltado para crianças. As apresentadoras mirins estiveram no Instituto e entrevistaram, durante uma hora,a presidente, Maria Alice Ancona Lopez.

Na Mídia
Novas publicações passaram a solicitar material informativo e também fotografias sobre a Irlanda. Como a revista DOM, que vai dedicar várias páginas na sua edição de setembro, para Dublin. O Instituto colaborou.

Success
With great satisfaction we see the growing interest in Ireland, through emails and visits from so many new friends of the Institute. Evidence of this was the success of the speech from Claudio Crow Quintino, Ireland: Magic and Spirit held on two consecutive days.

O'lympub: last week
This is the last week to join the O'lympub, at O'Malleys, in Sao Paulo. Nine people have already been awarded, and on Sunday, 31st, the winner will be known. Anyone who wants to know try the quizzes for themselves can visit our site at www.irishinstitute.com.br/sitemap.html#quiz

Workshop
Heart Beat is the title of the workshop dedicated exclusively to the teaching of Bodhrán, the Irish drum, it will happen on Saturday, September 6th, with the support of the Brazil-Ireland Institute.

The responsible for the initiative is Gustavo Lobão Maia, percussionist of the group Dundalk, which is going to talk about what is the Bódhran in Irish music nowadays and he is also going to show various techniques and rhythms possible with the instrument.

Location: Studio Merrow, at Rua Clovis Garcia, 87, Jardim Marajoara, Sao Paulo.

WEB TV
Ireland was the theme of the programme Cine Pipoca, WEBTV, which focused on children. The young hosts were in the Institute offices for a one hour interview, (photo - Interview with the President, Maria Alice Ancona Lopez).

In the Media
New publications have also requested information material and photographs about Ireland - such as the magazine DOM, which will devote several pages in its September edition to Dublin. The Institute collaborated.

Caros amigos

  Setembro foi um mês de muita atividade para assuntos que unem Brasil e Irlanda. Em Salvador,nosso presidente de honra, o embaixador Michael Hoey abriu oficialmente o III Simpósio de Estudos Irlandeses na América do Sul e nosso associado Claudio Crow Quintino, além de palestrante convidado ainda representou o Instituto e fez as vezes de repórter. Seu relato sobre este encontro está no nosso site.

  No dia 15 de setembro, em Dublin, a presidente do Instituto, Maria Alice Ancona Lopez (na foto com o Embaixador) compareceu ao coquetel de despedida do Embaixador Stélio Amarante, na Casa Brasileira. Alguns brasileiros radicados na Irlanda e personalidades do mundo diplomático foram dar as despedidas ao embaixador que volta ao Rio de Janeiro, sua cidade natal.

  O sucesso da Irlanda como destino para estudos pode ser comprovado em números. Em 2008 já são mais de 7 mil brasileiros estudando (principalmente inglês) na Irlanda. No ano passado eram pouco mais de 3 mil.

  September had a great number of activities to unite Brazil and Ireland. In Salvador, our Honorary President, Ambassador Michael Hoey, officially opened the Third Symposium of Irish Studies in South America and our associate Claudio Crow Quintino presented a lecture as well as representing the Institute and acting as our correspondent for the event.   In September 15th, Dublin, the president of the Institute, Mary Alice Ancona Lopez (in the picture with Ambassador) attended the farewell cocktail of Ambassador Stélio Marcos Amarante, at Casa Brasileira.

Some Brazilians based in Ireland and many diplomatic personalities of the world were there to wish good luck to the ambassador who returns to Rio de Janeiro, his hometown.

  The success of Ireland as a destination for studies can be shown in numbers. In 2008 more than 7 thousand Brazilians went to study (mainly English) in Ireland. Last year was just over 3 thousand.

  Our associates, the musicians of the group Lennan Shee are playing in October 31th at Café Aman, during the Halloween Festival.

  At http://www.irishinstitute.com.br/archive2.html#chester, in the text entitled "Hidden Treasures", I share some personal views on The True Dublin Wealth. In the heart of the city, the Chester Beatty Library deserves to be visited.

Com grande satisfação vemos o Irish Institute/ Instituto Brasil-Irlanda, atuando em diferentes áreas, no fortalecimento das relações entre os dos povos.

A Irlanda ganhou destaque na imprensa brasileira com a publicação, pela Folha de São Paulo, em 9/10, do Suplemento de Turismo inteiramente dedicado ao país onde, (conforme informamos em nosso newsletter extra), há matéria inédita sobre a visita de Dom Pedro II à Irlanda, em 1877.

Os documentos relativos a essa viagem, de grande valor histórico, foram entregues, no último dia 9, por Peter O'Neill, nosso vice-presidente e pesquisador do assunto, ao Museu Imperial de Petrópolis e agora fazem parte do seu acervo. Nas fotos:

- Já no Brasil, o ex embaixador Stélio Marcos Amarante, acompanhado pelo vice presidente do Instituto Brasil-Irlanda apresentou os artigos do Irish Times sobre a visita do Imperador brasileiro à Irlanda a Cléia Pereira da Cruz da Biblioteca Nacional do Rio (área de Iconografia) dia 14/10.

   Novo site:
A Embaixada da Irlanda no Brasil já tem novo site com dois links de acesso: www.embaixada-irlanda.org.br ou www.embassyofireland.org.br, com informações importantes e essenciais sobre o país, inclusive página especial para quem está estudando e precisa saber sobre a Irlanda, seu sistema político, etc. Vale a pena visitar.

  Credenciais:
O novo embaixador do Brasil na Irlanda, Pedro Fernando Brêtas Bastos, apresentará suas credenciais à presidente Mary McAleese, no próximo dia 21 de outubro.

   Cinema:

Shows - Duas bandas, nossas associadas, tocam em São Paulo. Associados do Instituto que comparercerem aos shows ganharão CDs dos grupos!

   Dundalk:
Dia 25 de Outubro à meia-noite show da banda Dundalk no Canuck's Pub. Rua Gomes de Carvalho, 1666, Vila Olímpia

   Leannan Shee:
Dia 25 de Outubro, a banda apresenta pocket show de 40 minutos na Livraria da Vila da Alameda Lorena, de um repertório selecionado do primeiro disco, Leannan Shee. No dia 31 de Outubro, Dia das Bruxas, faz show de três horas no Café Aman(av Miruna,396) O grupo vai mostrar coisas novas que estão fazendo com a música dos marinheiros da Escócia e Irlanda.    Celtic Woman:
Oportunidade para ouvir o grupo Celtic Woman: atendendo novamente a pedido dos ouvintes o harmonioso grupo irlandês retorna pela 6ª vez ao programa Cinema Songs Especial, na Rádio Guarani, de Belo Horizonte, com direção de Bob Tostes.    The Headlines:
Ireland was headlined in the Brazilian press when the 'Folha de São Paulo' published a Tourist Supplement ('Suplemento de Turismo') on the 9th of October. This Supplement was completely given over to Irish matters, relying on information from our own newsletters. It included unedited material about the visit of Dom Pedro II to Ireland in 1877.

The historically important documents about this journey, were entrusted to the Imperial Petropolis Museum ('Museu Imperial de Petrópolis') by Peter O'Neill, our Vice President and researcher of the material.

The photographs show:
[1} Peter handing over the historical archives, as well as a copy of the 'Folha' newspaper article, to Neibe Christina Machado da Costa, during his visit.

[2] notebooks containing original annotations by the Emperor of Brazil.

   Irish Times:
- The ex-Ambassador, Stélio Marcos Amarante (who is still here in Brazil), accompanied by the Vice President of the Irish Institute, presented the Irish Times articles (about the visit of Dom Pedro II to Ireland) to Cléia Pereira da Cruz (Iconography Department) of the Rio de Janeiro National Library ('Biblioteca Nacional do Rio') - 14th October.

The Irish Times (a reputable newspaper), published an article referring to the Folha de São Paulo's Tourist Supplement on 11 October. This article can be read at:

  New website :
The Irish Ambassador in Brazil already has a new website with two access links: www.embaixada-irlanda.org.br and www.embassyofireland.org.br, which have important and essential information about the country, incuding a special page for those who are study in, and who need to know about, Ireland (its political system etc). It's worth a visit.

  Credentials :
The new Ambassador in Brazil, Pedro Fernando Brêtas Bastos, will present his credentials to the President, Mary McAleese, on 21st October.

   Cinema:
Peacefire, directed by Macdara Valley, is the only representative of Irish cinema at the 32nd São Paulo International Cinema Show ('Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo'). Shows - Two bands, associates of the Irish Institute, play in São Paulo. PLEASE NOTE - associates of the Institute who attend the shows will receive a CD of the band's music!

   Dundalk:
On the 25th October Dundalk have a midnight show at Canuck's Pub. Rua Gomes de Carvalho, 1666, Vila Olímpia.

   Leannan Shee:
On the 25th October, the band presents a short 40 minute show at the 'Livraria da Vila da Alameda Lorena'' bookshop. They have chosen a reportoire from their first CD, "Leannan Shee". On the 31st October (Halloween Night or 'Dia das Bruxas') they will do a three hour show at the Café Aman (Avenida Miruna, 396). The group showcases their new interpretations of music from Scotland and Ireland. For reservations telephone 5041 9428, after 7 pm, to ensure a good table.

   Celtic Woman:
An opportunity to hear the group Celtic Woman: returning again for the 6th time, at listeners' request, to the Rádio Guarani programme "Cinema Songs Especial" in Belo Horizonte, with the director, Bob Tostes. Caros amigos

Com grande satisfação comemoramos, na data de hoje, um ano de Assembléia que estabeleceu o Irish Institute/Instituto Brasil-Irlanda.

Nesta oportunidade, quero agradeço mais uma vez a todos os amigos que nos ajudaram, a mim e ao Peter O'Neill, na formação desta entidade que hoje já triplicou seu número de associados, todos ávidos por ampliar seu conhecimento e estreitar a amizade entre os dois países.

Dear Friends

Today we celebrate the first anniversary of the inaugural meeting which established the Irish Institute/Instituto Brasil-Irlanda.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our friends who helped Peter O'Neill and myself to create the Institute. It has already tripled the number of its associates, all of whom are eager to extend their knowledge of Ireland and to strengthen the friendship between the two countries, Ireland and Brazil.

A special thanks to His Excellency, Ambassador Michael Hoey, our Honorary Chairman, for his invaluable and unflagging support for the project.

  Festival:
The Celtic New Year was celebrated in the best Irish way: with music and beer. The festival, which took place at O'Malleys on Monday 3 November in front of a full house included the bands Merrow and Dundalk, as well as our indefatigable associate, Claudio Crow Quintino, who was responsible for organising the event.   Culinary delights:
Irish cuisine now has a new stronghold in Sao Paulo: Mulligan, a brand new restaurant at Rua Bela Cintra, 1579. Associates of the Irish Institute can enjoy a permanent discount of 10%. From 4 November, every Tuesday is 'Guinness Day' in Mulligan, when the most famous Irish beer can be tasted for R$ 9.90.
